  6. Tomaz Kalin is Secretary General of RARE, European Association of Research
  7. Networks. He has been involved in the networking area for close to 20
  8. years, starting with the European Informatics Network, the first
  9. international research network
  10.  
  11.  
  12. Tomaz Kalin was born in Slovenia. After high school, study of Physics at
  13. the University of Ljubljana. Postgraduate studies at the University of
  14. Ljubljana with a Masters Degree. Postgraduate work at Rensselaer
  15. Polytechnic Institute, Troy, NY in scholastic year 1966/67. Doctorate in
  16. Physics.

  18. From 1981 part time Professor at the Computer science department,
  19. University of Ljubljana, teaching various undergraduate and graduate
  20. courses in the area of computer communications and networking.

  22. Hobbies:
  23. Skiing, Windsurfing, Classical music (Baroque and Classical period)

  25. Married, two children: Jan 26, Ana 18

  28. It is really a tough question that somebody, busy as myself (and I am sure,
  29. so are all the other candidates as well), has first to ask itself: why do I
  30. want to be a member of ISOC BoT?
  31.  
  32. There are many answers, on different levels:
  33.  
  34. *   some of the more personal:
  35.  
  36.      - it is fun and exciting rubbing shoulders with some of
  37.        the most distinguished figures in the networking field
  38.  
  39.      - it is rewarding to contribute to the developments in the area
  40.  
  41.      - it is challenging to have even a small possibility to influence
  42.     the developments in this field 
  43.  
  44. *  some of the rational:
  45.  
  46.       - internet as a way of life is going to influence the future
  47.     development of the society and it is of paramount importance to make
  48.     this beneficial to everybody, regardless of the level of economic and
  49.     political development of their respective country
  50.  
  51.       - working for the Association of European Research Networks would
  52.     enable me to contribute toward this goal by bringing the
  53.     European voice to the BoT 
  54.  
  55.       - Internet Society is the focal point for many necessary
  56.     developments in the standardisation, operations, security and
  57.     privacy areas and as such we must not spare the efforts for
  58.     ISOC to become global i.e. to be accepted as  top level
  59.     authority for those issues by the governments in our countries
  60.  
  61.       - during my term as RARE Secretary General, we will have another
  62.     INET/ JENC conference organised jointly by ISOC and RARE (in 
  63.     addition to Prague). Being an BoT insider would facilitate the
  64.     organisation
